Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are one method of resurfacing the skin, to help
reduce pigmentation, fine wrinkles, acne scarring, sun-damage
and therefore the overall appearance of the skin.
Peels come in varying strengths depending on the result required.
Deeper peels will give the best results but do involve a longer recovery period.
Dr David Bullock will discuss the type of peel suitable for your treatment and any pre and post peel preparations during your consultation.
Depending on what you are concerned with treating the
following peels are available at NCMC...

Jessner's Peel
Jessner's solutions contain a combination of three active ingredients - lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol - all in low concentrations. It is a very safe, superficial peel and is the peel of choice for those who want the benefits of a fruit acid treatment, but would like to see some flaking of the treated skin. Patients who would prefer to avoid flaking are recommended to have a series of glycolic treatments.
The Jessner's peel is suitable for those who want to freshen up their complexion, restore lustre, reduce pigmentation, and improve acne blemishes and blackheads. It is preferable to glycolic treatments for those with pigmentation problems.
For maximum benefit, it is recommended that you prepare your skin by using a product containing glycolic acid for two weeks prior to your peel. This preparation of the skin removes the first layers of dead skin cells, thus enabling the peel solution to penetrate more effectively, and is particularly important for patients with pigmentation problems. The most appropriate pre-peel products for you will be recommended by Dr Bullock at your initial consultation.
The amount of peeling you experience can be adjusted to your needs. In general, the more flaking you can tolerate the faster you will see results. Even the lightest Jessner's peel will make the skin shiny and tight for a few days, though this can be camouflaged with make-up. A heavier peel will result in peeling for anything from a day or two up to a week. Day 3 is usually the day with the greatest peeling. In addition, some patients experience red or brown streaking which disappears once the peeling is complete and is not cause for concern.
TCA (Trichloracetic Acid) Facial Peel
Trichloracetic Acid (TCA) is an agent that is used for superficial to moderately deep facial peels. It causes a marked degree of peeling of the facial skin. Patients who would prefer to avoid flaking are recommended to have a series of glycolic treatments.
The TCA peel is suitable for those who want to freshen up their complexion, restore lustre, reduce wrinkles and pigmentation, and improve acne blemishes and blackheads. It is preferable to glycolic treatments for those with pigmentation problems.

Even the lightest TCA peel will make the skin shiny and tight for a few days, as well as quite dark before peeling starts. Heavier peels will result in peeling for anything from two or three days up to a week or ten days. Days 3 to 5 are usually the days with the greatest peeling. In addition, some patients experience red or brown streaking which disappears once the peeling is complete and is not cause for concern.
